Is it possible to have this work with the screen off?

 

No, unfortunately, it's a limitation of AutoInput (and Android :/ )

 

Is it possible to intercept short and long press (execute a task while the key is in pressed state) differently? For eg short key press -> Task 1, long key press -> Task2

 

Yes, that's what this project is made for, take a look at the "Setting up" section.
Note, by the way, that tasks are launched only after a certain time has passed since last button release.

Hey, Coro, did you take into account custom ROMs or apps that modify volume steps? I'm getting some inconsistent behavior when the code attempts to restore the previous volume. It's usually one or two off.

 

I'm actually using a custom ROM with that feature enabled, and it's working consistently for me :/
Anyway, I'll double check and post an update if I'll find something wrong
