Location if an item in an array.

I know this is quite basic, but please help me out here. Hi, how do I find out the position of an element in an array and store that number in a variable? For eg. if an array "%lang()" is set to "English, Japanese, French", and I want to know where 'Japanese' stands in the array and get the result (in this case '2'), and store that result in a variable, how do I do that? Thank you.
