Open No Contacts Showing Up

Really excited by the possibilities of this thing. Unfortunately, when I go to the SMS/Phone tab (where I expect to see my contacts), I don't see anything.

I can successfully send a message if I enter the phone number manually, and it shows the history of messages I've sent to that number, but it doesn't keep track of messages I've received from that number and the number doesn't show up in the main contacts page which means I have to re-enter it each time.

The contacts don't show up on my MacBook or on the Join app on the device itself. The app on my Android does have Contacts permission. I've also tried restarting the phone. There is no notification suggesting it failed to sync contacts.

Android version: 8.0.0

Follow up to this: I got it fixed! What I had to do was go into Join settings, go to SMS and Phone Calls, turn off SMS and Call Service, and turn it back on. That triggered the sync.
