AutoNotification Does not intercept when screen is off

Football season is once again upon us! I have a task that makes lights flash when scoring notifications are received. However, although it worked perfectly last season (on my S6), it no longer does on my S8 unless my screen is on.
When I check the variable there is nothing there if the notification happened with the screen off. Screen on and it writes to it just fine.
Thoughts? Battery optimizer is off, in case that matters.
