Open Screen Wake

Is there a way to prevent the screen from waking when I use Join to handle a notification. Specifically in this instance I am using Boxer for email and whenever I mark an email as "Read" the screen will wake, notify me that the screen is locked, mark the message as read and then go to the lock screen. Thanks.
